Awesome Celebration of MVW 2012

What a great time and turnout today for the party that Brandy/Kalli and I threw for Miss Virtual World 2012, Anna Sapphire, over at our venue, Club Graffiti in The Village, in Second Life.

I definitely wouldn't call myself a fashionista in ANY sense, I'll leave that to the pros so have a look at the article on the BOSL Website, written by "rusalka"

I will say that with about 80 people on sim at peak, the sim held up fine, laggy yes, but crash we did NOT! This is likely because we started off with a 60 person limit and slowly raised it to control how quickly new people arrived. There is such a thing as "Crash Lag" which occurs when too many people are teleporting in to one place at the same time. Controlling the speed at which they are allowed to TP in seems to help... A LOT!

Thanks much to those who came out. I really had a great time performing for Anna and everyone else in attendance and welcoming her in as MVW 2012.  For those who couldn't get in, well I hope to catch you at future shows and events :-)

Anyways, here's the article.

Paper Cup

Sometimes when trying to fall asleep, I'm kept awake by a melody and my mind tries to write while I'm also trying to fall asleep. Most of the time it keeps me up. So last night, I decided not to fight it. I dragged myself up long enough to get the root of this idea down on lyrics and guitar.

This morning I found what I had written last night front and center on my computer, right where I left it. I continued writing along the storyline and recorded. This is one of those songs I would consider a gift, not for someone else, but given to ME, right on time for the holidays. But it kind of took its own shape and in many ways, wrote itself. Here's what it ended up as. It's very raw and meant to be so.

I won't offer any ideas as to what it's about, it does tell a bit of a story but I prefer listeners make up their own minds as to what it may mean to them.

Once again, Frolic Mills, CEO of BOSL (Best of Second Life) , invited me to perform live at The Miss Virtual World Pageant in Second Life. It simply amazes me, the work this man puts into this event year after year. This is my fourth year performing and each year I see such changes, improvements even.

But this year, like all others, was a challenge, what with all the tech glitches that only Second Life can hand us. But that does not in ANY way take away from the professionalism of the entire BOSL team and of course those with Meatverse TV - http://www.metaversetv.com - who ran the tech side of things, even broadcasting the event on their website.

I arrived at about 12:15PM SLT to perform at what was planned to be roughly 1PM or so. Hanging in the green room backstage, that quickly looking more like 2PM as the clock ticked by. Sadly, I had something to do in Real Life at around 2PM so I wasn't able to stick around much longer. I told Robustus Hax (Metaverse TV CEO), Dousa Dragonash, Persia Bravin and everyone else in the Skype conversation that I had to go fairly soon. They all worked and shuffled a few things around to get me on the stage sooner than later.

Have a listen to the live recording of my cover of Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" taken from the Miss Virtual World Pageant. Click Here!

In the end, I give a BIG HI5 to both the BOSL and Metaverse TV staff for some amazing professionalism in dealing with the Second Life glitches, ensuring a pretty smooth run of the MVW Pageant, technical issues and helping accommodate me personally so that Aden didn't have to sit there waiting at karate class wondering where in the hell i was!

Congratulations also to Serene Faith, Miss Virtual World 2011 who, today, enjoys her last day after a very giving and successful year as Miss Virtual World. Best of luck to the new Miss Virtual World 2012, whoever that winds up being!

Piano Lessons

I woke up this morning with a memory. Maybe I had a dream, I'm not sure but I just wanted to write this down so I have some record of it.

Many years ago, maybe when I was about 7, I had the fortune of taking piano lessons. My teacher, I don't remember his name, was a crotchety older man in his 50's as I can recall. He was extremely strict and disciplinary when it came to his students.

The first day I met him, I walked into his studio with my father holding my hand and I remember this very clearly, he asked me one question. He asked "Do you know how many keys there are on a piano?". I replied as quickly as I could "88!" Then he put his hand on my shoulder to lead me over to a huge black grand. (It was huge cuz this is little Seth we're talking about.)

He sat me down on the bench and asked if I knew how to play any songs. We had an old upright piano in our home that I used to mess around on and I was able to pick out parts of songs by listening to them. There was one that I had played a lot, Greensleeves. So I started to play it for him, left hand and right hand.

Not more than one bar into the song he stops me and says, "Where have you taken lessons before?" I turned at my Dad who sat silently watching and gave me only a look, which told me I needed to reply on my own to the teacher. "I haven't taken any lessons, just play what I hear in my head." is pretty much what I think I replied.

So the teacher looks at my father, gets up and walks over to him and I'll never forget this, he says "Your son has a gift." At the time, I wasn't quite sure what he meant but I knew it was a good thing because I remember Dad smiling at me.

After he and Dad spoke for a few more minutes, while I was tinkering on this beast of a piano, Dad and I thanked the teacher for his time. We walked outside and Dad turns to me and asks if I want to take lessons with this man. I said I did. So Dad walked back in, leaving me out in the cold wintery day on the cobblestone street. After a very short minute or two, he came back out and said he was sorry but we couldn't afford this teacher.

I was kind of upset but still happy. I knew this teacher was happy with me for some reason and that he liked me so I felt a sense of accomplishment perhaps in having tried and succeeding, regardless of that I wasn't able to take lessons from him.

We drove the short distance back home. Dad walked in the house while I stayed outside to play in the snow with my 5 older brothers who immediately started pelting me with snowballs! Good thing back in the day we had those really puffy jackets! But I'm sure they took it easy on little Seth.

I ran in the house and my Grandfather was sitting in his usual chair, red and white checkered robe swiping the floor, reading the paper. With his heavy Greek accent he asked me "do you really love music? Do you want to take lessons with that teacher?" I said "Yea, but we can't pay for it."

Then my grandfather said "I will pay for your lessons."

I don't really remember how much money he gave me, but I imagine he spoke with Dad before handing me some bills. I was so excited! I hopped on my my bike and drove through the slush and snow back to the piano teacher and told him I want to take lessons with him. So I gave him the money and he asked where I got it from. I told him Papoo gave it to me for my lessons. Then he kneels down and opens his hand and says "You give this back to your Papoo. Come back Tuesday and we'll start your lessons."

This kind man ended up giving me the lessons for free for about 6 months as I can remember and I think it's because of his kindness, I now have this amazing part of my life that has defined me in many ways. Music is universal and being able to create music is a gift that I am eternally grateful for.

During this Holiday Season, I want to thank you for your generosity and support of my music, in real life and Second Life. Without you, my friends and my family, I know that the meaning of my life would be very different.

Regardless of what Holidays you may be celebrating, I would like to wish you a wonderful Holiday Season and may God grant you Health and Prosperity in the coming New Year!

"Marry Me" by Train.

I wanted to share this video with you.

This song means a great deal to many people, myself included. It's such a simple song and that's what I feel makes it so beautiful.

I have about 50+ videos uploaded on YouTube if you'd like to check them out.

Club Graffiti in The Village

Click here to visit Club Graffiti

When I think of the many, many venues I have performed over the past 5 years in Second Life, there are really only a few that stand out. Some for the event itself, others for the fact that good friends may have owned them and maybe a couple of others that are/were just incredibly supportive of my music and of live music in Second Life as a whole and a few others that are/were really solidly designed and well thought out.

Club Graffiti is among these that stand out. First off, I own the place along with Brandy... so yes it does have a special place in my heart. It actually came about when Brandy and I were thinking of opening a place together. We were speaking about my Real Life professional touring years and I touched on a few places I had played early on in Greenwich Village, NYC. There was the Back Fence, Kenny's Castaways among others. But the highlight for me was performing one particular place, just those few times, sharing the same stage as so many greats before me like Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, The Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones and on and on. I'm speaking of the legendary CBGB's.

I was fortunate enough to have played there, but only once. But man I tell you, you can SMELL the vibe in this place! The walls were splattered with old stickers and posters from the 70's through the late 90's hen I played there. The stage was beat up. Old mic stands were strewn about and the graffiti was rampant. I LOVED IT!!!

So Brandy and I kept talking and we agreed, why not model a club, like CBGB's, only throw it back to the late 70's... create that vibe all over again... in Second Life. And that's just what we did.

Click here to visit Club Graffiti
Planted in "The Village", our 1/4 sim build, Club Graffiti is indeed modeled after CBGB's of the 1970's, complete with all the trimmings. One look inside and, as I'm repeatedly told (and agree with this), there is this standout "vibe" that I personally have not experienced in SL. We wanted this place to be different, welcoming sure, but definitely different than what Second Life residents were used to. If you have ever visited New York and checked out the "dive bars", Club Graffiti would definitely qualify!

Personally, I love being able to play my live music and hold our other events at Club Graffiti. When I place my avi's camera angle just barely above and behind my head, I can honestly say, it feels more like a real gig than anywhere else I've played in over 5 years in SL. While Brandy and I do own the place, what I'm saying still holds true.

Click here for your free Tshirt byGizza

Club Graffiti offers realism and many of the artists who have generously performed at our stage and with whom I've spoken personally have all agreed. It's just a very cool place. Cudos to Emile for such an amazing build and also to Brandy for working with me decorating, trimming it out, as we placed those subtle nuances that make it more realistic. I personally love the beat up taxi cab outside Gizza in the alley to the left of the club and then there's the sewer vents shooting out steam.

We put our hearts into this venue and when I perform, I can feel it. So if you're not busy, Most Sunday nights at 9PM SLT, I play a live gig there. Come on out.

You'll be among friends.

Linden Realms: A First Look

I had a quiet day today and after speaking a bit with Brett Linden, he let me know that today was the Linden Lab rollout of Linden Realms. Well being the 5 year veteran to Second Life that I am, I HAD to have a look.

I started here: Destination Guide "Linden Realms"

This link takes you to the "Portal" to the portals (so to speak). As you'll see from this Destination Guide page, there a about 10 different areas to start from. I chose the first on called Degrand.

(Here are a few screenshots taken from the Destination Guide itself)

Now I'm not really into Dungeons and Dragons games or those kind of video games (remember Dragon's Lair?), so this whole thing about collecting crystals was a bit off for me but, what the hell! I teleported to Degrand and found myself among maybe 10-15 others pretty much just standing about. Well I was there to check things out. So off I go. First thing is to find where the heck I need to go. I cammed out and found an odd looking oval stone and watched one oman walk in and not come out. "Hmmmm" I thought. So I walked in and instantly was teleported to another location where i found the goal was to get to a workshop and find some colored crystals.

free, free, music, marketing, blog, free, free, free, music, pr, seo, blog, free, free, free, free, free, live music, make money, money, free money, gift, gifts, seth regan, mankind tracer, secondlife, second life, sl, facebook, twitter, social, alexa rank

There's more to it but I certainly don't want to spoil the fun for anyone. but I'll just say, the builds that I saw in Degrand and other Realms were VERY cool. There's definitely a vibe the builders were going for and boy did they get it. There are minor details that not everyone will catch consciously, but being a graphic/web designer myself, I made sure to look. There were animated fairies, very cool mushrooms, sculpties all over, great huts and medieval style houses and other builds.

I'll have to tell you, I am thinking very positively about Linden Realms. It can and probably will create a whole new level of fun and interaction among SL residents.

So on my initial journey to Linden Realms, I give it two thumbs up. Mostly for the extra time and effort obviously poured into these builds.

I think my next stop will be Helfell! I kinda like the name!

Don DeVito, Producer of Bob Dylan Albums, Dies at 72

The cause was prostate cancer, a statement from Columbia said.

Don DeVito, a longtime Columbia Records executive who produced albums for Bob Dylan and others, died on Friday in New York. He was 72.

As an artists-and-repertory executive, Mr. DeVito brought Mr. Dylan back to his longtime label, Columbia, in the mid-1970s after he had been briefly signed to Asylum Records. The first album Mr. Dylan made under the new contract was among his finest, “Blood on the Tracks.”
Mr. DeVito produced Mr. Dylan’s 1976 album, “Desire,” and his 1978 album, “Street-Legal,” along with a television special and live album, “Hard Rain,” from Mr. Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976. He produced another live Dylan album, “At Budokan,” in 1979.
Mr. DeVito’s work with Mr. Dylan was part of a career that lasted four decades at Columbia. Born in Brooklyn on Sept. 6, 1939, Mr. DeVito got started in music as a guitar player, touring with the Royal Teens and later with his own band, the Sabres. He joined CBS Records in 1967 and by the early 1970s was working in the label’s artists and repertory department. He was named vice president of A&R in 1976 and national vice president of A&R in 1981.
Mr. DeVito worked with much of the Columbia roster, including Billy Joel (for whom he produced a live album, “The Millennium Concert”), Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Aerosmith and Blue Oyster Cult. In 1989 he shared a Grammy Award for best traditional folk recording for producing “Folkways — a Vision Shared: A Tribute to Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly.”
After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Mr. DeVito had a major role in producing the Concert for New York City, a globally televised benefit concert on Oct. 20, 2001, at Madison Square Garden. It was also released as a DVD and CD.
He retired from Columbia in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and his children, Marissa and James.

The Right Questions

I've been trying to find a solid block of time to be able to continue recording the new "Underground" album. As I've been saying at my Second Life shows, I hope it will be done soon... I've been saying that since probably March!

With the title track also called "Underground" already in recorded and up on iTunes, I am really working to find the time to get the next one done. I've been playing "Promise to Love" for probably over a year in SL now, but it's always been just acoustic and vocals, like all of my shows, other than a few originals on which I play and sing over my self produced backing tracks. So I am really looking forward to being able to add the backing tracks on this song and play it for the SL friends and fans.

One thing that's really prevented me from being able to get going fast on this album is, as with almost all my music, I write and perform all the parts: drums, guitars, orchestral instruments, vocals, etc. So before I can do anything in the way of recording, I need to first write all the parts. But I think this time around, I'm going to just start recording what I have one already. For "Promise to Love" the arrangements are all done, same with guitars and vocals, and a few string parts. The trickiest part, for me anyways, are the drum parts.

So here I sit with the main acoustic line recorded along with a scratch vocal track (used only for reference) which will of course need to be rerecorded right. As I'm listening back to what I've already recorded, I;m finding a bit of a shift in direction. I came up with this drum beat, nothing really ostentatious, but a solid driving beat and now the entire vibe of the song has changed. I love it, I do, but I've been pining over this song for so long, the way I've listened to it in my head probably for 8 years and all of a sudden I have this drastic change from a mellow acoustic tune to a kind of Metallica vibe. Not a bad thing of course LOL!

Now that I've had to restart my computer, it gives me a few minutes to digest all I've done and it got me thinking. How many times in my life have I thought I had something right, that I knew the direction I was going, then all of a sudden out of left field comes this completely new direction which opens doors I never even thought of. Like this sudden shift in this song's direction, that's the way life is. Here I am recording a song and then I'm thinking of how the recording process, not the song itself, shifted my thinking.free, free, music, marketing, blog, free, free, free, music, pr, seo, blog, free, free, free, free, free, live music, make money, money, free money, gift, gifts, seth regan, mankind tracer, secondlife, second life, sl, facebook, twitter, social, alexa rank

I believe it comes down to the questions we ask. Through the course of our days we ask ourselves a billion questions, day in, day out. Questions like "What if I turn left?", "Did I add too much garlic?, "Do I need something to drink?". These are all well and good but I'm talking of the more profound questions. Asking myself things like "Why can't I get this right?" or "Why is this taking so long?" I believe are the wrong things to ask, well not the wrong "things" but maybe more limiting. I take pride in knowing myself and being able to effect changes when needed, quickly. My point here is sometimes, I think it's important to remember that the one question we ask ourselves will only lead us down one specific path.

From recording this song, I have learned that instead of asking myself for example, "Why can't I get this right?", I should be asking the more positive questions like "What do I need to learn to make this perfect?", or "Where can I find more information to help me make this right?" This will open the door to more that that one direction of logical answers and these are more positive and optimistic ways of dealing with a problem. Now I can look at a situation with my eyes wider and my brain more open to other possibilities.

It's really the questions we ask ourselves that lead us down the paths we travel every single day. For me, I will try to work on this, trying to remember to ask more than one question in a given situation, more positive questions. Even when I might be frustrated or angry at not having a quick solution, it's important to step back and see the possible outcomes of asking different questions on a given problem.

Anyways, I thought I'd share this. Maybe someone can understand and relate.

Back to recording!

Black Friday event at Ground Zero

If you read my previous post, Thanksgiving Gift, you can probably understand that I was a bit nervous about being able to perform today. Thea and G Metal, both fiends and long time supporters of my live music performances in Second Life, are the owners of this fairly new Second Life Live Music Venue.

Kalli/Brandy and I had booked this event a few months back and I SO hate having to cancel last minute. The truth is, I had been looking forward to performing an afternoon show for some time, as my daily schedule doesn't allow for them as much as it used to. I've seen great support and friendship from fellow SL'ers across the pond. So much so that the "Friends of Mankind" group in SL banded together not once, but twice, to fly me out to Amsterdam to perform shows in Summer of both 2008 and 2009. So when I call the group "Family", I really do mean it.

Anyways, this morning I woke up feeling much much better and was really happy thinking I was going to be able to do this gig. Brandy and I got on the marketing at about 12PM SLT, and spread it out as we always do, to many different social sites, emails, SL notices, etc. I decided today, and this isn't an every day thing, to actually "MAKE" a set list for this show. Why? Well, as we all probably feel, we like to go that extra mile for people in our lives closer to us. Thea and G have been so amazingly supportive of me, of SL music and of fellow musicians, Brandy and I both felt that we really needed to pump it up for them.

At the gig, I was SO happy to see a lot of overseas friends and fans, I've missed you guys. Frankee, Renee, even Roos came in to the event along with about 60 others. An amazing turnout and not only because I was playing, but because I believe people in general will be more supportive of those that support others. Case in point: Thea and G. As I said earlier they are long time supporters of my own music but they work diligently to keep their venue booked with some of SL's best live artists. Further, I see them out there at other artists' performances as well.

So hat's off to you both and of course to Brandy for her amazing efforts and skills in marketing and promoting for our friends' venue. I really enjoyed performing at <<Ground Zero>> and hope to be invited back soon.

On a side note, I saw many new faces as well. It's good to see the music community growing with more people going to shows lately. The main thing is I saw a lot of audience interaction, not only to me and my show but moreover, with EACH OTHER"! I really love seeing people making friends and if it happens because of my show being the meeting place, then I'm truly flattered that much more.

Very large thanks to all who came out. It was a great time!

Thanksgiving Gift 2011

The day started off like many, getting Aden up, cleaned up, feed, dressed... you know. While he was still half asleep, I wanted to take a look at last year's pictures of Thanksgiving, just to see how much he'd changed.

I can say right off the bat he has definitely grown; not just in the physical sense but his mental state, the way he expresses himself, words, his reading at 3.5 years old, and overall emotional stability as well. It's really a gift for a parent to see their child progress, knowing that it is because of their combined efforts that the child develops into the beautiful person they are. OK I'm gonna stop there before I get all weepy :-P

But look at him from last year... man he was CHOWIN' down that turkey. This year, I don't think he ate anything at all, except maybe some of the pie and some apple juice. Maybe I should have taken a cue from him... might have avoided what came later!

I even watched some of the videos from last year, seeing how different even his walking is today. I'll admit, I'm crazy about taking pictures of him, those of you who are my friends on Facebook can likely attest to THAT!!! He is just constantly impressing me, ya know?

So the day progresses, we leave the house off to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. I carved that baby like there was no tomorrow, found some amazing apple juice to compliment this bird... all goes well till about an hour after we eat. I start feeling this gurgling in my belly. UH OH!!! No one else was having any cramping or feeling anything similar to this dagger I was feeling churning and grinding my insides. OMG it was harsh! I don't know if I just ate too fast, or some spec of "I KEEL YOU" landed specifically on MY turkey but I'll just tell you, it was bad. SO bad in fact that I had to cancel my SL show slated for 9PM. I don't recall EVER feeling thissick from eating in my entire life. To you women who are thinking, "we go through that every month.." NO NO!! NO WAY! This was WAAAAY above and beyond that! So what felt like a few hundred trips to the can and then this morning, thankfully... POOF I feel much better.

So I would like to thank this year's Thanksgiving for the gift of YEEEOUCH... and cudos to that amazing tasting bird that fooled me into eating too much of him. To you I say TOUCHÉ and well played... heck maybe it was one of the 5 casseroles or the banana cream pie, hell I don't know.

Anyways...  hope you all had a wonderful day with your family and friends. After all was said and done, I am very thankful for my son being in the world. He was smart to choose me as his daddy cuz NO one would ver love him as much as I do! I did enjoy the meal and the company and I know I am very blessed.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Pre-Thanksgiving Show

(Thanks to Butterfly Laa for the picture)

What an amazing night. I performed tonight at Key West, a long time supporter of live music in Second Life. I planned for the show to be an "all request" event and BOY the audience didn't disappoint. There were about 70 people in attendance and requests came in ranging from Train, to Pink Floyd, Live, Radiohead and even a few originals were requested.

The sim held up beautifully thanks likely in part to long time friend and Key West owner, Liz Harley, who wisely did a restart of the sim prior to the show.

Other Second Life musicians were on hand as well including Noma Falta, Lyndon Heart & Madmax Huet. It warms the bones to see musicians supporting musicians and being on the receiving end is an even bigger thrill.

My thanks of course to Liz and the wonderful SL residents who, after 5 years, still show me amazing support.

It's Thanksgiving tomorrow and among other things, I have you to be thankful for.
